For many families, the dream of higher education comes with hurdles. But for Dena Robinson, a single mother of three daughters, Laila, Leia, and Londyn, M.O.S.T. Scholarships have not only lightened the burden--they paved the way for her children's success.
Breaking Barriers Through Scholarships
Leia was among the first recipients of the McDonnell Scholarship, which started in 2020. She then went to the University of Memphis and now has her room and board covered by the M.O.S.T. College Scholarship. "It's still helping Leia in college because it's paying for her housing," Dena shared. For a single mother, the ability to cover not just tuition but also essential living expenses is a game-changer.
Londyn, now a Harding Academy high school sophomore, is following in her sister's footsteps as an M.O.S.T. McDonnell Scholar. Knowing that her hard work and dedication can translate into tangible support for her education, she remains focused on academic excellence. "The McDonnell Scholarship depended on them making good grades," Dena said. "And while they were already strong students, this gave them extra motivation."
Thriving in College and Beyond
Dena's voice radiates with pride as she talks about her daughters' achievements. Leia is currently thriving at the University of Memphis, and Laila, a student ambassador at UT Knoxville, recently helped recruit high school seniors at a reception event. "I'm so proud of all three of my girls," Dena said. "They are doing outstanding."
Despite initial concerns about the transition to large universities, her daughters have embraced college life, excelling in academics and extracurriculars. Laila even joined a sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, a testament to her involvement and leadership on campus.
The Power of Giving Back
For families like Dena's, scholarships are more than just financial aid; they are investments in the future of our city. "These scholarships provide a strong foundation," Dena explained. "They give my children opportunities they wouldn't have otherwise, and in turn, they'll be able to give back to their community."
Dena's gratitude runs deep. "Being a single mom, this support has been very beneficial to us," she said. Her experience has inspired her to pay it forward. "Whenever I'm in a position to give, I will, so that we can help someone along the way."
